Fragrance Safety

Safety of Fragrances Used in Shiseido Products

Shiseido complies with industry standards established by IFRA*1 and IOFI*2, which include regulations on the usability and usage amounts of fragrances and flavors. We also ensure a high level of safety by setting our own stringent safety standards in accordance with the ingredient regulations of various countries and regions, including Europe, the United States, ASEAN, China, South Korea and Taiwan.

  1. *1:IFRA (International Fragrance Association): An international fragrance and cosmetic association that establishes standards, restrictions, and prohibitions on the use of fragrances from the perspective of safety for humans and the environment on a global scale.
  2. *2:IOFI (International Organization of the Flavor Industry): Works together with IFRA to provide fragrance products that users can safely use, focusing on product safety, raw materials, and manufacturing within the flavor industry.

Efforts Toward Fragrance Safety

Some fragrance ingredients may rarely pose concerns such as skin sensitization*1 or phototoxicity*2. To appropriately assess these ingredients of concern, Shiseido has conducted joint research with RIFM (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials), the research body of IFRA, on evaluation methods. Additionally, in the field of photosensitization, Shiseido participates as a member of the Photo-Safety Core Team, providing expert knowledge to RIFM. Through these efforts, Shiseido continues to strive to enhance product safety.

  1. *1:Skin sensitization: The property of causing allergic reactions when the skin is exposed to chemical substances.
  2. *2:Phototoxicity: The property of causing skin irritation when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet light after application of certain chemical substances.
