Sun Care Technology

Uviolin was launched in 1923 as Shiseido’s first sun care product. As a result of evolution in the period of about 100 years, sun care research in the recent years has led to the development of innovative technology to heighten sun care effect with factors of water and heat, as well as the elucidation of the impact of sunlight other than UV ray on the skin.

Shiseido Confirms the Impact of Blue Light on the Skin

We have confirmed that sunlight-intensity blue light has an adverse impact on the skin by using biophoton (UPE)*1 measurement technology that visualizes oxidative stress*2 in the skin with high accuracy and analyzing skin components.

  • *1:When UV-induced oxidative stress increases, the skin's innate abilities to maintain moisture, transparency, and firmness will deteriorate.
  • *2:Biophoton (UPE; ultraweak photon emission): Extremely faint light generated from living organisms and invisible to the human eye. It is known to increase with oxidative stress.

Shiseido Develops World's First “Technology that Increases UV Protection Effect with Heat”

We developed the world's first technology that increases the effect of UV protection by spreading the UV protection ingredient evenly in a film coating when the applied sunscreen is warmed by heat such as from the sun. This technology, which is unique to Shiseido, prevents reduction of the UV protection effect in a harsh environment, but moreover improves the effect.
