Turning the Power of the Sun into Sun-powered Skincare

Shiseido has been researching ultraviolet rays for over 100 years. The culmination of one of these efforts was the creation of Sun Dual Care™, a breakthrough new SPF formula that can convert a portion of sunlight into beneficial light. The challenge to first develop it began with rethinking sun protection from just “how to prevent ultraviolet rays” but how we could also benefit from them too. Going back to the basic premise that "the sun is the source of life," we focused on the photosynthesis process of algae, which absorb sunlight to create life-sustaining energy. This inspiration led us to develop a new formula that would not only prevent UV rays but also to convert them into "light with beauty effects.” A global team of about 40 researchers with different fields of expertise worked together to conduct about 500 prototypes. Finally, we were able to deliver products that employ this innovative technology, now featured in our Sun Dual Care™ product line. We will continue to think outside the box, focus on people's happiness with the skin at the center, and strive for further beauty innovations.
