Diverse Professionals
In 2020, we introduced a job-based personnel system for Shiseido Group managers in Japan (approximately 1,700 employees) with the aim of strengthening expertise. Then, in 2021, the system was expanded to non-managerial positions (approximately 3,800 employees).
As part of the system, job descriptions and grades were established for each department. By clarifying the functional competency expertise and skills required for each role, we aim to enhance performance management.
To assist managers with subordinates in implementing and monitoring the new job descriptions and functional competencies, we held four workshops in 2021. And for managers without subordinates, we established a new grade that allows them to fully demonstrate their expertise and have their contributions recognized fairly.
We also introduced a global standardized process in which our performance management program was revised. The new process evaluates both the achievement of performance targets and the degree of actions taken in line with our TRUST 8 Competencies.
Since the introduction of the job-based personnel system, 4,470 employees in Japan have participated in career workshops and pursued independent career development.
Diversity & Inclusion in the Workplace
As expressed in our slogan “Love the Differences,” we recognize and respect each other in all the ways that make us unique. We strive to create new value by promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
We see gender equality and the empowerment of women as a management strategy to enhance employees’ vitality and improve results. The percentage of women in leadership positions across our global organization is 57.5%. In Japan, as of January 2021, the percentage of female leaders was 34.7%. We aim to increase this to 50% by 2030 to fairly represent gender equality.
To increase the number of female leaders, we introduced a workshop program called “NEXT LEADERSHIP SESSIONS for WOMEN” in 2017. These workshops provide training specifically designed for female employees pursuing a career in management, with a focus on issues unique to women. In 2021 alone, 48 women participated.
Employees with disabilities are essential in creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. In 2021, we joined “The Valuable 500” — an international initiative to support the social advancement of people with disabilities. And in 2019, we implemented an initiative to offer more job opportunities to people with disabilities. As a direct result, we now employ around 350 people with disabilities, several of whom work instore as Beauty Consultants.
In 2017, we also introduced Reverse Mentoring — a diversity and inclusion initiative in which employees act as mentors to corporate officers and department directors. This initiative encourages open discussion and aims to create a flat organizational structure that embraces and incorporates different ideas. To date, a total of 684 employees and executives have participated.
Health and Safety of Employees
It is our mission to realize a sustainable society through beauty. To accomplish this, we must create a work environment where all employees can work safely.
To support the health and safety of our employees, we established the “Shiseido Health Declaration” and the “Shiseido Vision Zero Declaration (Safety Declaration).” Koichi Noda, Chief People Officer, is responsible for managing employee health and safety. He is also responsible for the creation and maintenance of healthy, safe workplaces by setting KPIs and leading occupational accident countermeasure committees.
Shiseido Health Declaration
“Our mission is BEAUTY INNOVATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD. To that end, we promote initiatives for employees and their families to live beautifully and healthily based on our perception that beauty and health are sources of vitality.”
Shiseido Vision Zero Declaration (Safety Declaration)
"Our vision is to achieve zero leave accidents by creating an environment for employees to work healthily and safely."
Human Resource Development Through Art and Heritage
Our heritage has been passed down from one generation to the next, empowering us to create new value and enrich culture since our establishment in 1872. Our heritage also forms the basis of our corporate culture, supporting and nurturing the concept of PEOPLE FIRST.
Our employees around the world learn about our heritage through various educational initiatives, including online lectures, video content, virtual museum tours and more.
In 2021, we renewed the “SHISEIDO ARCHIVES,” an online content hub featuring past work, and conducted heritage lectures in person and online, which were attended by around 2,000 employees in Japan.
In addition, to hone employees’ aesthetic awareness and promote the “art” aspect of our DNA, global brand SHISEIDO offers employees the opportunity to enroll in an arts MBA.
