Support for Students Evacuated from Ukraine

Shiseido Company, Limited (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Masahiko Uotani; hereinafter “Shiseido”) and International Christian University (Mitaka-shi, Tokyo; President: Shoichiro Iwakiri; hereinafter “ICU”) have decided to jointly provide long-term support for the students evacuated from Ukraine and facing difficulties. Shiseido plans to provide the following supports to the Ukrainian students, whom ICU plans to accept from May, with the aim of providing them with educational opportunities.

1. Partial support for living expenses
2. Partial support for tuition and facilities fees
3. Providing opportunities of internship and part-time job at the Shiseido Group companies
4. Providing opportunities to promote mutual understanding between Ukraine and Japan
(Exchange events with Shiseido employees, invitations to the events hosted by Shiseido Group, etc.)

The specific details of the supports will be determined upon discussion between the two parties. Taking this opportunity, ICU and Shiseido will build a strong partnership, aiming to promote diversity and the SDGs.

Under its corporate mission “BEAUTY INNOVATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD” and as part of its support activities with the efforts of all the employees, Shiseido has been providing humanitarian assistance through the UNHCR (the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) by making donations and sending products as relief supplies to evacuees. Meanwhile, ICU holds its mission to nurture people who can contribute to peacebuilding based on deep reflection on the Second World War, and since 2018, the university has been accepting the Syrian refugee students as regular students.
With this background, ICU and Shiseido will work together to provide humanitarian care to the Ukrainian students who are entering Japan due to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and the neighboring regions, including partial support for living expenses and tuition and facilities fees, as well as offering opportunities for part-time jobs and internship.

Message from Shoichiro Iwakiri, President, International Christian University

This collaborative initiative makes it possible to offer support that a university alone could not provide. In addition to guaranteeing Ukrainian refugees a stable life and the opportunity to continue their studies, we are also able to help them to make connections with Japanese society outside the campus and to offer them the possibility to build career opportunities.
The future of Ukrainian students is closely linked with the future of Ukraine. We hope that, in spite of the difficult situations in which they find themselves, the Ukrainian students at ICU will be able to start the process of rebuilding their lives, and that the light of hope for a peaceful future will be restored in their hearts.
On our campus where we value dialogue and diversity, we are committed to offering support to meet each individual’s needs.
Through the partnership between Shiseido and ICU, we will realize our mission as a ‘university of tomorrow’ committed to the creation of a brighter future, praying for the return of everyday life full of peace in Ukrainian society and in the heart of each Ukrainian individual.

Message from Shiseido President and CEO, Masahiko Uotani

We all feel deep sorrow toward the current situation in Ukraine where a large number of people have lost their everyday lives and have nowhere to go. We would like to do our utmost to support the Ukrainian students entering Japan through promoting various humanitarian actions such as partial support for living expenses and tuition fees as well as offering opportunities for part-time jobs and internship in the hope of helping them to have their future. Furthermore, we strongly hope that safety and peace will be ensured for those who are facing this hardship, and that peaceful days will return as soon as possible.
Going forward, we will actively call for more educational institutions and private companies to participate in this project and offer long-term support while considering various forms of support together with our employees around the world.
