Shiseido employed world-first skin analysis technology to discover that, as the skin’s outer (stratum corneum) layer becomes harder with age, the dermal layer underneath becomes softer. This gap of hardness facilitates increased wrinkle formation, and was identified by researchers as the root cause of wrinkles.
Furthermore, it was discovered that increased hardness of the skin may lead to increasingly deep wrinkles.
Using proprietary technologies developed in-house, Shiseido researchers revealed that the outer, stratum corneum layer of the skin becomes tougher while the dermal layer underneath simultaneously becomes softer and less taught over time. Continued analysis revealed that manipulation of the skin through forming of facial expressions and other such movements in a person with a toughened stratum corneum layer imparts significant mechanical stress on the dermis underneath, which may result in faster breakdown of collagen within the dermis. In other words, Shiseido researchers made the novel discovery that toughening of the stratum corneum combined with collagen breakdown within the dermis serve as one cause of wrinkle deepening over time. As follows, maintaining a soft and pliable stratum corneum layer can have an improvement effect on wrinkles.
Tests have confirmed that continued use of Pure Retinol for four weeks leads to a softer stratum corneum. Moreover, continued use thereafter increases water content in the stratum corneum layer, boosting softness and pliability.

Tests using epidermal cells (keratinocytes) showed that hyaluronic acid had increased 48 hours after the addition of Pure Retinol. Water content in the epidermal and stratum corneum layers increased, which is expected to increase softness and pliability.
Epidermal hyaluronic acid quantity evaluations confirmed that Pure Retinol promotes greater production.
Tests using dermal cells (fibroblasts) showed that type I collagen amounts had increased 48 hours after the addition of Pure Retinol. This is expected to help skin recover its firmness and elasticity and have an improvement effect on deep wrinkles.
